Why am I having to put money down, I thought I already reserved a phone?
We have always taken pre-orders since our initial Kickstarter campaign ended in late June 2015. Even as we began shipping, demand was so high that we were still in a pre-order mode. We did not want to open pre-orders when we sold out of phones until we had a solidified production timeline which we now have secured. The reservation was a way to be fair to interested users so that they would have the opportunity to pre-order chronologically to when they were interested and visited our website.
We are sorry for any confusion this process might have caused. There is no additional payment after the pre-order, you are essentially buying the phone in advance. You can chose not to pre-order and wait until October 30th and if there are remaining phones they will be put on the website with the option to immediately purchase, however, this does not seem likely currently. We are trying to increase the quantity of this batch however some of our customized parts have long lead times.
When will I get my phone?
We expect to have all the pre-orders shipped by October 30th. Shipping times vary on region, but are typically 2-5 days. We have solidified our production timeline and accounted for buffer, however there is always a risk due to a variety of factors that something might get delayed. We will be prompt in our communications if there is a slip in timeline.
What do you mean 6 months of free service?
The Light Phone is a GSM mobile phone which requires an active SIM card to work. On top of that we’ve built a platform that allows the Light Phone to maintain your primary phone number. We are able to provide this SIM/platform for $5/month or $25/6 months. Because we are asking for pre-orders and your patience in waiting until October, we are happy to offer 6 months of free service when you receive your phone. You will be required to sign up to our service plan at that time, but will not be charged until those initial 6 months have passed. There is no obligation to use our SIM/platform however, you will just need to find a SIM suitable for your needs (The Light Phone is a 2G GSM phone. T-Mobile or one of its MVNOs like Ting support the 2G network).
